Who should take this class?
those who have an interest in documentary photography, photojournalism, travel photography, street style blogs or environmental portraits
What you will learn
Assignment photography is unique in that the photographer responds to a brief, or photographic objective, which is issued according to the needs of an editorial team or client. Working this way provides many interesting challenges, much as a scavenger hunt can spur creativity and heightened awareness of surroundings.
We'll be on location for the entire duration of Field Guide III. Meeting locations (within the 5 boroughs) will be disclosed at least two days before class. Instructors will hand out assignments and a map of the area, as well as some background details, and students will get to work:
- Understanding your environment and maximizing it
- Photographing people you don't know (yet)
- How a scene can change depending on the time of day
- Responding creatively to a brief
- Being fearless and trying new things
What to Bring?
Field Guide III will meet rain or shine, so be prepared and dress appropriately. A DSLR is preferred but not required. Once you're registered, you'll receive detailed instructions on meeting time, location and what additionally, if anything, to bring.
Prerequisites
Field Guide III: On Location is not for beginners. If you are not already comfortable and proficient with controlling exposure through aperture / shutter speed / ISO, color (white balance), motion blur and the like, please consider taking Field Guide I and/or Field Guide II first, or Digital Photo I: The Basics.
